Each UK depot has a code that is used when allocating locomotives to the depots. The original code was STF which was first used in 1875 and was replaced by the British Railways code for the depot which was 30A. In 1973 the depot carried the SX moniker before becoming SF. Locomotive construction took place at the adjacent Stratford Works and Stratford TMD was initially located on this site located in the V between the Lea bridge and Great Eastern Main Line. In 1871 the depot moved to the 'teardrop' of lines to the west of the present Stratford Regional station. The site of the depot is now taken up by Stratford International station.
