"Chirp! Chirp!" Throughout the sixteen years of Serena Yancy's life, she never once needed an alarm clock. Her mother's pesky little Fletchling did the job for her just fine. Whether she wanted to sleep in or have some peace in her room, that Fletchling would always find some way into her room. It had almost become routine for that irritating Flying-type to barge into her room and start her day off rudely. "Get out of my room! It's a freaking Saturday!" Serena shouted at the top of her lungs when she found the bird Pokémon perched on top of her dresser. "Don't you know that barging in is rude?"

  • "Chirp! This day was like any other with Fletchling flying in and chirping Serena out of her sleep. With an automated groan, Serena shuffled herself up in her bed. She carefully scratched her eyes open, moved some messy blonde hair out of the way, and tried to see if she could spot the stupid bird. "Get out of my room! It's a freaking Saturday!" Serena shouted at the top of her lungs when she found the bird Pokémon perched on top of her dresser. "Don't you know that barging in is rude?" The Fletchling chirped in happiness as its task was completed and flew out of Serena's room. She shook her head in frustration and threw herself out of her bed. The first thing she saw when she turned her head was her mirror. "Guess I should get ready," she sighed and walked over to her mirror, shuddering at the thought of what she'd look like after waking up. One quick glance was all it took for Serena to know how she had to get ready for the day. In her reflection she could see that her bed hair looked awful and that she needed to change out of her pink pyjamas. She would die of embarrassment if any one of her friends got to see her in her pink pyjamas... Calem Xavier specifically. Calem had only been in the Kalos region for about a month but Serena already took an interest to him. There was something about his calmness that clicked with her and she went out of her way just to attract his attention. However, it didn't appear like her efforts were met with great results. Serena quickly rushed into her bathroom to start her day. After a fast brush, shower, and change, she hopped out of the bathroom in her new clothes. The first thing she did was to take a glance at her mirror, giving herself a thumbs up when she approved of her own appearance. "God Serena, you look amazing. Well, when do you ever not look amazing?" She admired herself vainly. "That red hat, those white sunglasses, that black top, that red skirt, those black leggings, those black shoes, and of course that pink purse! You're perfect!" "Serena!" Her mother Grace called from downstairs. "Breakfast!" "I'm coming, mom!" Serena shouted back. She took one last look in the mirror, gave herself a nod of approval, and bolted down the stairs. The wafting smell of her mother's cooking hit her in the face as she entered the kitchen and she felt her stomach rumbling. "It smells delicious mom!" Serena complimented and headed for the dining table before noticing her older brother in a seat. "Wait, Skyler!? You're back home?" "Yeah, I figured I should at least come back and visit," he shrugged and took a bite out of what appeared to be crepes. "Skyler surprised me this morning when he rang the doorbell," Grace said and served Serena a plate of crepes with a side of bacon. "It's been a while since I've had both my kids back at home." "Where did you even come back from?" Serena asked in a mocking tone. "It's not like you're doing anything important. And you're still wearing those same clothes you always wear. When are you gonna learn that a hat isn't supposed to go backwards?" "I was visiting the Sinnoh region, where people actually appreciate my skills as a trainer," Skyler shot back. "Thanks for the sarcasm, by the way." "Isn't that where Tobias went?" Serena asked. "Your public enemy number one?" "We're more of rivals now," Skyler shrugged. "In fact we had a battle yesterday." "Oh did you now?" Grace asked with interest and took the third seat at the circular table. "How did it go?" "Tobias wiped him out with only his Darkrai again," Serena blurted out before Skyler even had a chance to say anything. "Serena!" Skyler exclaimed, clearly insulted. "Do you really think I'm that bad of a trainer?" "I mean it's true, isn't it?" Serena giggled, taking pride in her brother's misery. After all, it was the sibling thing to do. "Be honest" "Maybe..." Skyler mumbled softly. "But I mean have you ever battled a legendary Pokémon before? They're not easy to beat!" "Why don't you catch one then?" "Because I don't know where to find one." "Sucks for you." "Do you know where one is?" "No, but Tobias does," Serena shrugged with a sly smirk and sipped on her MooMoo milk. "Why don't you ask him?" "Serena!" Grace scolded her daughter. "That's enough! Quit giving your brother grief." "It's my job," Serena sighed and continued to eat her breakfast. "Anyways, Skyler also has a little surprise for you," Grace told her, changing the subject. "A surprise?" Serena asked, looking at her brother with curious eyes. "What kind of surprise?" Skyler quickly dug into his backpack which was conveniently by his legs. It took a good bit of time but he managed to pull out a white envelope with a PokéBall seal on it. After checking it to make sure it was the right one, he handed it to Serena. "Remember how you said you wanted to be a Pokémon trainer?" Grace asked as she watched her daughter rummage into the letter. "It's addressed from Professor Sycamore," Serena mumbled and read through. "To Serena Yancy... blah blah blah... here at the Lumiose City Lab we... blah blah blah... studying through a PokéDex... blah blah blah... we need you as a Pokémon trainer!" Serena's eyes were wide with excitement and her mouth was wide open. She had always wanted to be a Pokémon trainer and now she finally had her chance. And the best part was her mother was okay with it! "You... you guys are okay with me being a Pokémon trainer?" Serena asked her family. "Like... I can go on an adventure by myself?" "Well, you won't be going by yourself," Skyler informed her. "What do you mean?" Serena asked, unsure if it was good news or bad news. "I had to deliver the same letter to Shauna and that new kid Calem this morning," Skyler explained. "Professor Sycamore also said he contacted Trevor and Tierno. He said he wanted a tight group of friends traveling together." "No way!" "Yes way," Skyler said. "Shauna said she'd be here soon so you guys can head to Aquacorde Town and get your starter Pokémon." Before Serena could reply with anything else there was a loud knock at the door. "That must be Shauna," Serena squealed and hopped out of her chair. She ran to open the door and found both Shauna and - much to her shock - Calem on the other side. "Oh! It's both of you!" "Hey Serena, we just wanted to know if you were ready!" Shauna exclaimed with her signature smile. "We're heading off to Aquacorde Town soon!" "Yeah, we're all packed up and ready to go," Calem added in. "I'm excited to finally bet my own Pokémon!" "I'm not ready yet," Serena sighed. "I just found out right now and I haven't even started packing." "Well just come get us when you're ready," Calem told her. "We'll be waiting outside." "Awesome!" Serena smiled and ran back into the house, slamming the door shut behind her. "Was that Shauna?" Grace asked, beginning to wash the dishes in the sink. "Yup, Shauna and Calem," Serena answered and headed for the stairs. "I'm gonna pack up real quick." "Leaving already?" Grace asked and watched her daughter bolt up the stairs into her room. "You just got the news five minutes ago!" "And I have to start sooner than later!" "Let her be," Skyler told his mother, still sitting at the breakfast table reading a newspaper. "Don't you remember how excited I was when I first got to head out on my journey?" "Yes, but knowing you I knew you'd always come back and visit often," Grace sighed. "With Serena I'm not so sure." "Come on mom, she's a good girl." "I know, it's just gonna be different without my babies around anymore." "Mom!"
