SARD Alice Springs is one of the many research facilities located throughout the world that are affiliated and controlled by S.H.I.E.L.D. Advanced Research & Design and S.H.I.E.L.D. It is the most advanced out of all of the locations and as such, the most protected. Furthermore, it has the distinction of having the most dangerous experiments conducted there, out of all of the SARD research facilities. The facility provides a number of jobs to the local population of Alice Springs, though some people find it hard to make the somewhat long commute out of the town of Alice Springs. Also, arrangements have been made with the Australian Defence Force, particularly the Australian Army to oversee protection of the base to make sure that the local government does not feel that S.H.I.E.L.D. is attempting to take over part of the country, even if it is a small part. As such, the Australian Army maintains a presence on the base and has a liaison to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Post Commander, Ashley Vasquez. Lucas Gates has recently taken over the formerly vacant position of Chief of Research. After a horrifically failed Gamma Experiment, SARD-Alice Springs is non-operational.
