  • The Diocese of Newark, part of the Episcopal Church in America, is comprised of the northern third of the state of New Jersey including Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and Warren counties, plus the city of Summit in Union County. It was separated from the Diocese of New Jersey in 1874. The seat of the diocese is in Newark, at Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral, built in 1810. The current bishop is the Right Reverend John Palmer Croneberger. He was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of Newark on November 21, 1998. He was installed as Bishop of Newark on February 26, 2000. Bishop Croneberger announced in 2005 that he will be retiring sometime after the 2006 General Convention.
