Aiming to secure a sea route to the Russian Empire, British (Imperial) and French troops launched a naval campaign to force a passage through the Dardanelles. After the naval operation, an amphibious landing was undertaken on the Gallipoli peninsula in order to gain a foothold on Thrace in preparation of capturing the Ottoman capital, Constantinople.
