  • Aiming to secure a sea route to the Russian Empire, British (Imperial) and French troops launched a naval campaign to force a passage through the Dardanelles. After the naval operation, an amphibious landing was undertaken on the Gallipoli peninsula in order to gain a foothold on Thrace in preparation of capturing the Ottoman capital, Constantinople. Despite initial concern for the allied troops, brought about mostly by the Turkish defences, breakthroughs in the August and September of 1915 forced a break in the Ottoman army, and allowed the British and French army to launch another major military campaign, this time against the Ottoman capital Constantinople.
