During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Imperial Japanese Army lays siege to the city of Nanking, the capital of China at the time. This film was dangerously close to being Banned in China, because it humanized the Japanese. The director received lots of online death threats, and it would've been pulled from Chinese cinemas if not for the support of a Communist Party official, who was a huge fan. Apparently, doing a movie depicting the Japanese as 90% pure evil instead of 100% can be a very controversial thing. All the characters in this movie were real people, FYI. Has been compared to Schindler's List, because of big similarities. Only this one is even more depressing...
