The 2009-10 Reserves season was the first to see John McMahon coach the Reds' second string team. Liverpool greatly improved on their seventh place League finish of the previous season by claiming third spot in the Reserves North Division. Liverpool had in fact looked on course to win the division after a run of seven straight victories at the start of the season following an opening day loss, but then lost five matches in a row at the end of the season to finish nine points adrift of champions Manchester United. Liverpool won both of the local cup competitions during the season- successfully defending their Liverpool Senior Cup whilst knocking out holders Man Utd on penalties on their way to claiming an eleventh Lancashire Senior Cup.

After Liverpool's League campaign had ended, a group of Reserve players were taken to Germany to compete in the RUHR Cup. Liverpool were one of eight teams invited to take part in the competition which uses 60 minute matches- 30 minutes per half. Liverpool performed fairly well in their group, picking up four points of a possible nine, however this was not enough to see them qualify for the knockout round and so Liverpool were eliminated at the group stage.
