When Richey's ship crashed on the planet Theta VIII in 2044, an unknown alien force created a physical representation of the novel, including the hotel and all its characters, in an artificial environment meant to provide a simulation of normal life for Richey. Unknowingly, though, the aliens had sentenced Richey to a sort of Hell, dooming him to live the remainder of his life in the world of the novel with its poorly written characters and no real Human interaction.

Richey described it in a diary entry as being "a badly written book, filled with endless cliché and shallow characters." (TNG: "The Royale" ) In the episode's script , Data reviewed it thusly: "The writing is elementary, the plotting predictable, the characters one-dimensional." Der Roman enthält eine Reihe von klischeehaft skizzierten Charakteren und ist darüber hinaus schlecht geschrieben. Als die Charybdis im Jahr 2044 auf Theta 116 VIII niedergeht, werden von einer unbekannten außerirdischen Macht das Hotel und all seine Charaktere künstlich in einer physischen Form erschaffen, um Richey ein normales Leben zu ermöglichen. Allerdings empfindet dieser das Leben im Hotel als Hölle. Als ein klingonisches Schiff die USS Enterprise darüber informiert, Trümmerteile im Orbit von Theta 116 VIII gefunden zu haben, erkundet die Besatzung den Planeten, nachdem die geborgenen Teile identifiziert sind. Ein Außenteam gerät dabei in die gleiche, noch immer aktive Nachbildung des Romans, in der bereits Colonel Richey gefangen ist. Das Team kann sich nur befreien, indem es die Rolle der im Roman erwähnten Investoren übernimmt und das Hotel kauft. (TNG: )
