In 2371, Jake Sisko considered turning down the writing fellowship he had been offered by the Pennington School. Before he revealed his reason for doing so (namely that he was worried about his father being alone), Sisko thought it was because he was worried about being homesick. Later, Benjamin made Jake promise that he wouldn't base his decision to go or not on how his father's proposed date with Kasidy Yates turned out. Jake ultimately decided to wait a year in order to gain more experience from which to draw his inspiration. (DS9: "Explorers")

  • The Pennington School was a learning institution located in Wellington, New Zealand. In 2371, Jake Sisko considered an internship at the Pennington School to study writing, but decided to wait another year before considering it again due to the wealth of story information he would get by remaining on Deep Space 9. (DS9 episode: "Explorers") Jake was still considering attending Pennington in 2372 and 2373. (DS9 episodes: "Homefront", "The Muse", DS9 novel: Trial by Error) Jake had been accepted by Pennington in 2385 and was studying there. (ST - The Fall novel: Revelation and Dust)

Later, Benjamin made Jake promise that he wouldn't base his decision to go or not on how his father's proposed date with Kasidy Yates turned out. Jake ultimately decided to wait a year in order to gain more experience from which to draw his inspiration. (DS9: "Explorers") In an alternate 2372, after his father died, Jake Sisko considered attending the Pennington School. Nog was happy about this decision because they would both stay on Earth. Although Jake still had his doubts, he eventually graduated several years later. (DS9: "The Visitor") In the realized timeline of 2372, Jake visited the Pennington during a trip to Earth with his father. (DS9: "Homefront") Later that year, he briefly discussed his plans to attend the school with Onaya when she asked him what he was doing to make sure he'd be remembered. (DS9: "The Muse") The Star Trek: Vanguard series of novels features a 23rd century journalist named Tim Pennington, after whom the Pennington School is presumably named. There is also a boarding school in New Jersey with the same name. The American writer Stephen Crane attended the actual Pennington School.

(DS9 episodes: "Homefront", "The Muse", DS9 novel: Trial by Error) In 2376, Jake Sisko thought about applying to Pennington again after Kasidy Yates had given birth. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book Two) In an alternate timeline in which Benjamin Sisko was displaced from time and presumed killed, Jake left Deep Space 9 and attended Pennington, which he later graduated from. (DS9 episode: "The Visitor") In 2383, Jake applied to the Pennington School again and was considering moving to New Zealand with his wife Azeni Korena. (ST - Typhon Pact novel: Raise the Dawn) Jake had been accepted by Pennington in 2385 and was studying there. (ST - The Fall novel: Revelation and Dust) While this school does not actually exist, Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, does in reality have its own well renowned creative writing program. Wellington-based New Zealand fan writer, fanzine editor and convention organizer, Lana Pennington-Brown, who was befriended by several of the production staff of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, inspired the name of the fictitious educational institution. The Star Trek: Vanguard series of novels features a 23rd century journalist named Tim Pennington, after whom David Mack has confirmed the Pennington School is named.
