| - PAL 은 아날로그 방송 시스템에서 사용되는 (세계적으로 널리 쓰이는) 컬러 인코딩 방식이다. 아날로그 텔레비전에서 널리 사용되는 방식으로는 그 밖에 SECAM과 NTSC가 있다. PAL 은 독일의 Telefunken 사의 Walter Bruch 에 의해 개발되어 1967 년에 발표되었다. PAL 은 Phase-Alternating Line, Phase Alternation by Line 혹은 Phase Alternation Line 의 약자이다. "PAL" 이라는 용어는 주로 625 라인/50 Hz 의 (주로 유럽쪽에서 사용되는) 텔레비전 시스템을 가리키는 말로 사용되며 "NTSC" 는 525 라인/60 Hz 의 (주로 한국/일본/북중미 지역에서 사용되는) 텔레비전 시스템을 말한다. 따라서 DVD 들은 "PAL" 이나 "NTSC" 둘 중의 하나로 표기되어 있으며 이들은 위에서 말한 각 지역별로 사용되는 라인수와 주사율을 가리키는 것으로 실제로 PAL 이나 NTSC 방식으로 컬러 인코딩이 되어있지 않은 경우도 있다.
