Its diet consisted of large mammals and birds who entered or came to the edge of the water in search of food or drink. After grabbing its prey in its long, powerful snout, the marsh dragon drowned the victim and then tore the flacid body apart with twisting bites. This involved spinning its entire body, but the beast was exceptionally agile when it was in the water.

This involved spinning its entire body, but the beast was exceptionally agile when it was in the water. The swamp dragon spent its nights in the water and baked on the shore during the days the sun was out. It fed on an average of once every two days. While swimming, it used the rocks it swallowed for ballast. Its nostrils and throat were equipped with flaps and valves that enabled it to stay under water for extended periods without fear of intaking part of the marsh or river.
