He played junior hockey for the Sudbury Wolves and the Copper Cliff Redmen. Shewchuk was with the Redmen when they lost the 1936-37 Memorial Cup Final. The Boston Bruins signed him in 1937 and he played the 1937-38 and 1938-39 seasons with their farm team the Providence Reds. The following season he played full-time with the Bruins but split the 1940-41 season between the Reds and the Bruins. Despite the split he got his name on the Stanley Cup in 1941. He continued with the Bruins until 1943 when he joined the Canadian military during World War II.
