Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, leader of the Republic, was aware that the Jedi were searching for a Darth Sidious, a mysterious Sith Lord who they believed had both started and maintained the war. Unbeknowest to them, Palpatine was Sidious, and he was controlling both sides, in hopes of achieving his true objective—utter control of the galaxy. Palpatine orchestrated a lightning attack on the planet, led by General Grievous, Supreme Commander of the Droid Armies. Grievous put together an armada of thousands of destroyers and frigates—led by the Providence-class destroyer Invisible Hand—for a strike on Coruscant. Thanks to a secret hyperspace route, supplied by Sidious, the Separatist fleet bypassed the heavily-defended Corellian sector, and came out of lightspeed right on top off the Coruscant Home Fleet, and most of their ships were annihilated due to the fact that their shields were down. However, the Republic recovered, setting up a conservative defense around the planet, awaiting for re-enforcements—Grievous did his best to delay the incoming Republic fleet, and headed down to the planet, where his ground forces gave him the distraction he needed to, in spite of the Jedi's best efforts, kidnap Palpatine, which had been his true objective all along. However, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker were informed of the assault on the Republic's capital, and quickly drew up a plan to rescue the Chancellor. Flying through the mayhem in Coruscant's orbit, Skywalker and Kenobi reached the Invisible Hand, and made their way through the ship to reach the observation platform—Palpatine appeared to be on the verge of being released from his "inprisonment," when Count Dooku strode into the room, leading to the Jedi drawing their sabers, and Dooku drawing his.
