Mines are resource buildings in Tropico 3 and Tropico 4. They're used to extract valuable minerals and ores from veins in the earth. However, each vein has a limited amount of ore inside it; once all the ore is mined out, it becomes necessary to find another or begin importing the material. Mines must not be located directly on top of resources, since the building will hinder the mining process, but they must be located very close to maximize production. Mines become obsolete in 1973, when they're replaced by borehole mines.

Mining operations are considered detrimental to the island's natural beauty by the Environmentalists and they'll be unhappy as long as any mines are present on the island. Mines become obsolete in 1973, when they're replaced by borehole mines.
