He played Tier II Junior "A" for the Burnaby Express and the Victoria Grizzlies from 2006 to 2009. In 2009 he joined Boston University. The Tampa Bay Lightning chose him 210th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Justin is the son of retired NHL player Geoff Courtnall.
