  • Marie Galtier (d. 1932) was the wife of Lucien Galtier and the mother of six. A quiet, sensible, and hardworking Quebecois farm woman, she cared little for politics, but supported the establishment of the Republic of Quebec by the United States because US Major Jedediah Quigley gave her house electric power when he built a hospital on her husband's farm. She died in 1932 of an abdominal cancer which her son-in-law, Dr. Leonard O'Doull (Riviere-du-Loup's leading physician), was unable to treat. He thought she might have survived had she been diagnosed earlier, but with typical Quebecois stubbornness she ignored her symptoms as long as possible. Her husband was bereft when she died and remained so for several years.
