Doug Flowers was the eight-month-old son of Pete and Mary Flowers. Doug was colicky, and often cried for no concrete reason. As the days passed, Pete became convinced that Doug was deliberately making him miserable with his crying. Doug's crying often came at inopportune times for Pete. Moreover, Doug developed a sidewise look that Pete believed was proof of his son's calculating ability.
