Everybody had to produce documentation (birth certificates etc.) proving their ancestry up to their great-grandparents, and depending on how many of them were Jews, you could have 1/8-Jews up to full Jews. If only a few grandparents were involved, it was sometimes possible to fake documents. Since the churches kept good records, procuring the documents was usually not a problem for non-jewish Germans.
