It seems that Duncan Hunter has taken the title of the conservative candidate the GOP was been looking for. On May 26, 1999, Duncan Hunter voted against the bill to strengthen the Social Security Lockbox. The bill essentially stated that any federal government budget surplus cannot be spent unless the issues regarding Medicare and Social Security are solved. Social Security has been the third rail of politics for many years now, but now more than ever it must be addressed. Before there was Social Security, growing old in America also meant growing poor in America. When passed this progressive reform, those Americans who were retired or incapable of working could still survive thanks to the assistance of the federal government. The money that is taken out of your pay checks pays for the Social Security for today’s seniors. By the time all the baby boomers retire, and that’s already beginning, each retiree will be getting the amount equivalent of that taken out of only two paychecks. This minuscule amount is not enough to survive on and that’s why we need Social Security reform and the amount will only be less for the following generations. A vote against the bill to prioritize solving Social Security when there is a budget surplus is a vote against seniors and against a system which will collapse without any monetary input. Is there a better way to use extra money the federal government has than helping Americans ensure they won’t starve or wind up homeless because they are too old or incapable of working?
