Battleships are the embodyment of sea power. A strong navy is vital to the success of a nation, and control of the seas is vital for the projection of force on land and overseas. The role of the battleship is to sweep the enemy from the seas, and in conjunction with other naval forces give naval support to the land battle. abstract
  • Battleships are the embodyment of sea power. A strong navy is vital to the success of a nation, and control of the seas is vital for the projection of force on land and overseas. The role of the battleship is to sweep the enemy from the seas, and in conjunction with other naval forces give naval support to the land battle. The main armament of the Brandenburgs are four 38cm MK1/42 guns mounted in 2 twin turrets fore and aft of the superstructure. The magazines hold 100 shells per gun, with a mix of armour-piercing and high explosive. The guns have a range of 30km. For engaging land targets at longer ranges, the Scharnhorst's carry 32 MFK107S cruise missiles housed in 4 LVSS41 Vertical Launch System housings situated amidships between the funnels. Another LVSS41 launcher houses 64 BLF162S air defence missiles which can engage air targets at ranges in excess of 50km. For surface combat against other warships, the ships have a single LSS16 launcher for the SZR84S Anti Ship missile, with a total of 24 missiles available. All the ships combat systems are controlled by a Robitron ZEUS Digital Combat Management System which utilises the Robitron FPAR Advanced Phased Array Radar system, whuch is mounted on a tower aft of the funnels. FPAR has four fixed (i.e., non-rotating) sensor arrays (faces), fixed on a pyramidal structure. Each face consists of 3424 transmit/receive (TR) modules operating at X band frequencies. The radar provides the following capabilities: * air target tracking of over 200 targets out to 150 km * surface target tracking of over 150 targets out to 32 km * horizon search out to 75 km * volume search out to 150 km * cued search (a mode in which the search is cued using data originating from another sensor) * surface naval gunfire support * missile guidance using the Interrupted Continuous Wave Illumination (ICWI) technique, thus allowing guidance of 32 semi-active radar homing missiles in flight simultaneously, including 16 in the terminal guidance phase * "innovative" Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM) The navigation systems and communcations antennas are housed in a seperate interated mast just aft of the bridge.
