Schmid made his debut in 1979 in the German men's national hockey team. Her first great success was the title at the European Indoor Championships in 1981. In the same year, she was goalkeeper at the World Cup in Argentina, where the German team won the title. in 1983, Schmid was fourth at the World Championships, in 1984, she won bronze at the first European Championships. In the same year, she went to the 1984 Summer Olympicsas the master gate guardian. There she was ousted in the tournament however Ursula Thielemann as master goalkeeper. The German women's field hockey won silver behind the team from the Netherlands. Two years later the team at the World Championships in the Netherlands lost to the hosts and won a silver medal again. The German team at the 1988 Summer Olympics finishing in 5th place after finishing fourth at the European Championships in 1987.

Im gleichen Jahr fuhr sie als Stammtorhüterin zu den Olympischen Spielen 1984. Dort wurde sie allerdings im Turnierverlauf von Ursula Thielemann als Stammtorfrau verdrängt. Die deutschen Feldhockeydamen gewannen Silber hinter der Mannschaft aus den Niederlanden. Zwei Jahre später unterlag die Mannschaft bei der Weltmeisterschaft in den Niederlanden den Gastgeberinnen und gewann erneut Silber. Nach einem vierten Platz bei der Europameisterschaft 1987 belegte die deutsche Mannschaft bei den Olympischen Spielen 1988 den fünften Platz.
