While Vanessa Ferguson ate a cheeseburger and coleslaw at a Denny's at a truck stop on I-10 just west of Las Cruces, New Mexico, a man sat down beside her at the counter. Yvonne, a waitress, called him "Bron" and asked how he was, to which he replied "I'll do". When asked what he wanted to order, he pointed to Ferguson's plate and said he'll have what she was having. The two began chatting and he introduced himself as Bronislav Nedic.

| - While Vanessa Ferguson ate a cheeseburger and coleslaw at a Denny's at a truck stop on I-10 just west of Las Cruces, New Mexico, a man sat down beside her at the counter. Yvonne, a waitress, called him "Bron" and asked how he was, to which he replied "I'll do". When asked what he wanted to order, he pointed to Ferguson's plate and said he'll have what she was having. The two began chatting and he introduced himself as Bronislav Nedic. Nedic was in his early 40s, with thick black hair and beard that had only a few threads of white. Ferguson thought he looked like a rougher Nicolas Cage. His arms were muscular and hairy with black hair too and a big, nasty-looking, pink scar on his left forearm and a cross tattoo with a "C" above and below the bar on each side on the back of his right hand. When Ferguson asked about the tattoo, Nedic explained it was the Ocilima, a symbol of Serbian unity. The four "C"s were cyrillic for "S"s and stood for Samo sloga Srbina spasava which translated to "only unity will save the Serbs". When asked about the scar, he explained he fought against the "terrorist" Bosnians and the "Nazi" Croats when Yugoslavia came apart and was injured by a RPG. After the war, he emigrated to the U.S. and worked as a truck driver. He currently had a load of frozen chicken parts he was delivering to Los Angeles. Ferguson said she was heading home to L.A. which bemused Nedic at the thought that anyone was born there. The two hit it off and exchanged telephone numbers but went their separate ways after they finished their lunches. Nedic and Ferguson did begin to date. Whenever Nedic was in the L.A. area, he would stay in San Pedro. Ferguson lived in San Atanasio, first in her father's house then in her own apartment but would take the bus down to San Pedro whenever Nedic was in town. He introduced her to Serbian culture in the expatriate community there and she pick up more on her own to please him.
