The earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed estimated 230,000 people in Indonesia (167,736), Sri Lanka (21,411), India (18,045), Thailand (8,212), Burma (ca. 400-600), Somalia (289), Maldives (108), Malaysia (75), Tanzania (13), Seychelles (3), Bangladesh (2), South Africa (2), Yemen (2) and Kenya (1). 125,000 people were injured, around 1.7 million lost their homes. The Boxing Day Earthquake belongs to the deadliest seismic events ever recorded.

The Boxing Day Earthquake belongs to the deadliest seismic events ever recorded. The place where the earthquake hit is on a subduction zone where the Indian plate dives under the Burma plate. The the whole subduction zone of these two plates with a length of about 1000 kilometers was ruptured during the quake.
