The Great Insurrection was a civil war fought between the UNSC and the Alliance of Human Colonies, a faction created by veterans of the Human-Covenant War who were outraged at the increasing use of Sangheili military personnel in the policing and management of many far-flung colonies. The leaders of the rebellion tapped into a vein of widespread discontent in the Outer Colonies, and some of the Mid-Rim worlds which had suffered heavy-handed reprisals at the hands of the Unified Earth Government at the end of the 2554 Mid-Rim Protests, as well as this there was widespread anger at steps taken by the government to centralise power at the expense of the colonies. | - The Great Insurrection was a civil war fought between the UNSC and the Alliance of Human Colonies, a faction created by veterans of the Human-Covenant War who were outraged at the increasing use of Sangheili military personnel in the policing and management of many far-flung colonies. Many felt that such actions undermined the colonial lives lost to protect Earth and the Republics. On the tenth anniversary of cessation of the Human Covenant War, John O'Kelly declared his intention to leave the UNSC and take his battlegroup with him, this was closely followed by referendums in over one-third of the surviving colonies, one hundred and eighty nine in total declaring their intention to follow O'Kelly's leadership. In all, over one hundred and thirty ships from the three hundred and forty seven strong UNSC Navy defected, taking almost all veteran captains with them. The Sangheili vessels patrolling the worlds aligned with O'Kelly's faction quickly and quietly slipped away, desperate to not be embroiled in a potential human civil war. For the first months, neither side officially announced war, however on August 12th, the UNSC Battlegroup Orion arrived at the Alliance capital of New Carthage and attacked without warning after weeks of planning, although the attack failed, it marked the first battle in a war that would last seven years.
