Josiah Gunton (1861-5 March 1930) was an architect who was a member of the Corporation of London and briefly a member of the London County Council. Born in Cambridgeshire he was the son of Josiah Gunton (1818–95), a farmer, and Elizabeth née Barnes (1827–71). By 1881 he was living in Hackney and was an architect's assistant. In 1886 he married Jessie Runchman. In 1928 he was elected to the London County Council as a Municipal Reform Party councillor representing the City of London. He died suddenly at Hotel Metropole, Monte Carlo, Monaco in March 1930.

Born in Cambridgeshire he was the son of Josiah Gunton (1818–95), a farmer, and Elizabeth née Barnes (1827–71). By 1881 he was living in Hackney and was an architect's assistant. In 1886 he married Jessie Runchman. He was articled to Gordon and Lowther architects and became a partner in 1885. His son William Henry Gunton (1881-1974) joined as partner in 1916 and the firm eventually became Gunton and Gunton. A Wesleyan Methodist, Gunton designed many chapels for the denomination. In 1904 he was elected to the Common Council of the City of London for Coleman Street Ward. He became chairman of the Streets Committee and in 1907 he was appointed as one of the City's representatives on the Metropolitan Water Board. He became an alderman for Coleman Street Ward in 1924. In 1928 he was elected to the London County Council as a Municipal Reform Party councillor representing the City of London. He died suddenly at Hotel Metropole, Monte Carlo, Monaco in March 1930. Served as a representative of the Corporation of the City of London on the Local Government Board [1].
