He played for University of Wisconsin from 1990 to 1993 and was chosen 48th overall by the New York Islanders in th 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He turned pro in 1993-94 with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles and also played 12 games for the Islanders. Plante missed virtually all of the 1994-95 season after suffering a serious injury in the Islanders training camp. He signed as a free agent with the Chicago Wolves of the International Hockey League and won the Turner Cup in 2000. He retired in 2002. In the NHL Plante played in 159 games (all with the Islanders) and scored 9 goals and 14 assists.
