A loot whore is someone who, for whatever reason, prioritizes loot gained or the process of doing so over other gameplay aspects, such as repeatedly running instances for specific drops. Within a negative context, it generally does not refer to loot gained through casual questing, the purely aesthetic-motivated pursuit of equipment by roleplayers, nor groups assembled specifically to acquire loot for under-geared friends. Actual loot whoring is associated with a self-centered attitude in play, with the implication the player joins groups solely as a strategic tool rather than enjoyment in its own right.

Common aspects of loot whores are: * Rolling against players for loot simply because they enjoy some more frivolous aspect to the loot * Abruptly quitting groups, even mid-instance, the moment it becomes apparent their desired loot hasn't/won't drop * Refusing to help groups only because they have bypassed bosses and thus their associated loot * taking items in raids because the player has sufficient DKP or authority to do so rather than taking the needs of their guild into account Other times, the term is playfully self-deprecating. The structure of a party or the nature of drops sometimes means a player will acquire a large proportion of good loot through sheer luck, especially if they are the only player able to utilize it well (i.e., multiple cloth drops in a 4DK/1priest party) to the point they mass pass loot to someone else in the interest of fairness or as off spec gear.
