Shako killed him, and the co-pilot. The mission controller, Jake Falmuth, gave orders for the bear to be shot so the capsule could be recovered, but when another group of men from a nearby ice station were also killed, Falmuth decided to go up to the Arctic to do the job himself. He took a CIA ecologist, an Eskimo named Buck Dollar to help him.
