- Bill Anderson was born the son of a Canadian expatriate nurse and an American Marine in Buffalo New York. Bill's father Jack was killed in action during the Battle of Leyte and his mother moved to Winnipeg in 1946. The Anderson's struggled through the 40s and 50s and Bill left school after grade 9 to work in the Western Flyer factory to help support his family. In 1962, at age 19 Bill married his 17 year old sweetheart Hannah. The young couple worked hard, having 3 children meant that Bill often worked double shifts. In 1966 Bill completed his Grade 12 requirements through night school. Elected president of his union local in 1967 Bill began to get involved heavily with labour activism and left wing politics. In 1969 Bill left the Western Flyer Factory to take a job as a Union Organizer with CAIMAW while attending university. Graduating in 1973 Bill continued his job with CAIMAW until being elected President of the union in 1974. As Union President Bill worked tirelessly for the rights and well being of his brothers and sisters until 1977 when he was elected President of the Manitoba Federation of Labour. As President of the Manitoba Fed Bill developed strong connections with the Manitoba NDP, often working with their members to advocate for workers all across the province in opposition to the policies of the Lyon government. In 1981 he accepted the NDP nomination in the South Central Winnipeg riding of Osborne and defeated Tory Attorney General Gerry Mercier. From 1981 to 1985 Bill served in various backbencher roles including chairing the Industrial Relations Committee. In 1985 Premier Pawley appointed Bill to cabinet as Minister of Labour and Housing, a position he held until the defeat of the NDP government in 1988. Bill ran in the leadership race to replace Pawley, but could not gain the support needed to go onto the second ballot. He bowed out of the race and supported Gary Doer. In 1988 Bill lost his seat in the legislature as part of the NDP defeat. Later in 1988 Bill was elected to Parliament as the NDP MP from Winnipeg Transcona. In 1989 Bill was elected leader of the NDP. Bill enjoys spending time with his family, attending Blue Bombers games and hunting. Bill maintains his membership in CAIMAW which has recently merged with CAW and frequently speaks at union rallies and events. He is a member of the Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus and holds generally traditional social values along with his passion for justice and the cause of workers. Hannah Anderson is a teacher and is currently the president of the Manitoba Teacher's Society, Bill Jr. is a Priest, Jack is a policeman and Anna is in her last year of undergraduate studies at the University of Manitoba.
