The Black mark system was a system for Jagex to keep track of they way players behave in RuneScape. When players broke the Rules of Conduct, they were given a certain amount of black marks depending on the severity of the offence. For example, if a player broke Rule 1, that player generally received anywhere from 0.3 to 2 black marks. If the appeals were successful, the player might be able to recover the banned account, although it may be permanently muted by Jagex instead. The black mark system was removed by Jagex on 11 May 2009.
