Grey Lightning was a neutral Force power developed by Cyril Ahlen Khan and Deven Jarmain. The lightning was found to be only accessible when the user chose neutrality of the Force, making it extremely difficult to use. The discharge of energy did not occur through an inner release of energy, but instead the lightning was created by a sophisticated directing of surrounding energies. The power was first discovered during a telekinetic training process in which Deven was teaching Cyril to direct the Force energy around him. The sudden burst of energy was unintentional, and the unexpected discharge severely injured the unprepared student. After the incident, the power was determined to have been caused by a separation of the two dominant Force energies: the light side and the dark side.

The finished design of Grey Lightning was difficult to control and often harmed the user significantly. Many people trying to learn the technique could not even use it. The lightning required a dominant particle view of the force and an intense understanding in directing physical Force energy. Also, the power could not be done unless the user could completely separate the surrounding dark side and light side Force energies. Doing this required a detachment form either side of the Force. The power could only be driven by a calm mind, and thus could not be used in anger, hatred, or mental stress. Grey Lightning, being so difficult to learn, had very few practitioners. The training of the power was often frustrating and damaging. If the trainee of the lightning did not direct the energy properly, the results of the energy discharge could be lethal even to the user. Being a juggernaut of energy, the power was dangerous to anyone in its path. Also, the lightning was difficult to use more than once a day. As a result, many potential students turned away from the risky training, while some learners gave up in their efforts. The applications were also difficult to learn and use. The first intention of the power was to be a last ditch maneuver. However, this was difficult to do under the stress of battle. In fact, the power was so difficult to do, even in practice, that it was rarely applied at all to common life situations.
