  • Gerald Edmund "River" Shannon (October 25, 1910 – May 1, 1983) was a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger who played five seasons in the National Hockey League for the Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Eagles, Boston Bruins and Montreal Maroons. He was born in Campbellford, Ontario and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He played for seven years (1927 to 1933) in the Ontario Hockey Association and then signed as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators. In his rookie season he scored 11 goals and 15 assists in 48 games. Shannon moved with the team to the St. Louis Eagles but his production dropped off. He was traded to the Boston Bruins for Joe Jerwa. He did not do well with the Bruins, and spent more time in the minor pros. In 1936 Shannon was traded to the Montreal Maroons and scored 16 points in the 1936-37 season. But the next season he dropped to only 3 points and was again sent down to the minors. Shannon retired in 1940.
