He was the Brother of Bonanno Underboss Giovanni Bonventre and uncle to Bonnano Capo Cesare Bonventre. Vito is also Joe Bonnano's Cousin. Vito Bonventre was the boss of a crime family which later became the Bonanno crime family from 1911-1915, he resigned as boss and held the position of underboss from 1915-1930. On July 15, 1930, Bonventre was gunned down by Masseria gunmen outside his garage. Bonventre is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens.

Bonventre later served as underboss to New York mob boss Salvatore Maranzano during the Castellammarese War. During the early months of the war, Bonventre became a target as the Brooklyn-based Castellammarese began to threaten Giuseppe Masseria's domination over Italian organized crime. On July 15, 1930, Bonventre was gunned down by Masseria gunmen outside his garage. Bonventre is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens.
