The maesters are an order of scholars, healers, postmen, and scientists who are trained at the Citadel in Oldtown. They are sometimes referred to as "knights of the mind".

- Maesters are learned men in the Seven Kingdoms. They are trained in Oldtown, beginning as novices, advancing to acolytes before reaching the rank of Maester. The highest ranked are called Archmaesters. Each Maester wears a chain around his neck, each link of a different metal. Each Archmaester has a mask, ring and rod of one metal, signifying that they are in charge of that area of study.
* Black iron is for ravencraft, the training of ravens to carry messages. The Maesters train white ravens as well as black.
* Gold is for mathematics
* Silver is for healing
- Each Maester is the leader of their people and their representative in Bevelle. They perform various duties to do with the governance and protection of the people of Spira, such as commanding the Crusaders and overseeing the Temples of Yevon. The only position in Yevon higher than Maester is Grand Maester , most notably held by Yo Mika, who has been in the position for 50 years.

The Maesters are not above keeping secrets from the people of Spira. For 1,000 years, the truth regarding the Final Summoning was kept quiet to preserve the spiral of life, death, and hope, which surrounds Sin. Although allowing citizens to know the truth may have served Spira better, they believed Sin could not truly be defeated and fostered the false hope in order to keep Spira going.
