He maintains a fair degree of impartiality in formal proceedings and gatherings of the Masters where Kvothe is involved, although there are hints that indicate that he personally has a fondness for the young prodigy. He displays no bias against him, and can be said to have always cast his official weight in a fair manner where Kvothe is concerned. He does not tolerate disorder during official proceedings, and will rebuke other Masters without hesitation if they conduct themselves in a manner that is out of order. He is one of few people alive who know how to read and braid Yllish story knots, and teaches Kvothe during Wise Man's Fear. At the end of Wise Man's Fear, he falls ill and Master Hemme is elected Chancellor.
