It was founded in 1946, and for its first 56 years, it was a federation of regional agricultural supply cooperatives. CF then demutualized, and made an initial public offering of shares of equity stock in 2005. The primary operating subsidiary is CF Industries, Inc. From August 2008, the shares of its parent, CF Industries Holdings, Inc., were included in the S&P 500 Index of large cap stock prices.
