  • The ancient humanoids were one of the oldest sentient species and possibly the first humanoid species to evolve in the Milky Way Galaxy on an ancient planet. They flourished some 4.5 billion years ago and explored the galaxy, but found no other lifeforms like themselves. Believing that the life span of a single species was finite, the ancient humanoids seeded the primordial environments of many planets with a DNA code that would direct the evolution of life on that planet towards a form similar to their own. At least Earth, Indri VIII, Loren III, Ruah IV, and Vilmor II were directly seeded by the ancient race. Other species that likely originated from seeded primordial seas included Klingons, Romulans/Vulcans, and Cardassians. Some of the fragments of DNA also contained parts of a computer program designed to display a holographic message from an ancient humanoid explaining her race and their actions. It was hoped that their descendant species would come together in the spirit of cooperation in order to assemble the program. In the 2360s, the noted Federation archaeologist Professor Richard Galen discovered the existence of the program and began collecting the genetic samples. However, the Klingons and Cardassians also learned of the program and sent expeditions of their own to assemble it, each believing it to contain a great technological advance, while the Romulans observed all of them under cloak. After Galen's death, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D was able to convince the Klingons and the Cardassians to cooperate with them to finish the program. The last part of the program was obtained on Vilmor II, and the message was played to the assembled members of each present party. The Klingons and Cardassians rejected the message due to their own prejudices, but the Romulan captain later expressed to Picard in confidence that perhaps their races were not as different as they had previously believed. The ancient humanoids also recorded a computer program in the DNA, designed to display a holographic message to the future humanoid races. We might speculate that in most of the planets seeded by the ancient humanoids; insectoid, reptiloid and mammalianoid species evolved. However, thanks to the different environment conditions found on different planets; on some of them, sapience may have evolved in the insectoids or reptiloids, rather than mammalianoids. If this is true (there is no evidence that it is), it is possible that all life in the galaxy (with ) evolved in similar paths thanks to the ancient humanoids. This would explain for once why most lifeforms in the galaxy, even the non-humanoids, are so similar to each other: the majority of them are carbon-based, for instance, and share a bilateral symmetry and similar organs, like eyes, brain, digestive tract, limbs, etc...
  • The beings known as the ancient humanoids were presumably the first humanoid species to evolve in the Milky Way galaxy, some four and a half billion years before the common era. Their true name lost since time immemorial, they have also come to be known as the Ancient Progenitors, and the Galenites, a name derived from the man whose work led to their discovery, Dr. Richard Galen. (TNG: "The Chase", Star Trek: Dark Horizon, Star Trek: Pendragon) During the height of their existence, they explored the galaxy, but found no lifeforms like themselves. Realizing that their species would one day cease to be, they seeded many primordial planets with the building blocks of life, encoding the DNA so that it would evolve into forms similar to their own. Earth was one such planet. Other species to arise from this seeding program include the Cardassians, Klingon and Vulcans. Encoded within certain DNA fragments were parts of a holographic message, meant for the ancient humanoids' progeny: "You're wondering who we are; why we have done this; how it has come that I stand before you - the image of a being from so long ago. Life evolved on my planet before all others in this part of the galaxy. We left our world, explored the stars and found none like ourselves. Our civilization thrived for ages, but what is the life of one race, compared to the vast stretches of cosmic time? We knew that one day we would be gone, and nothing of us would survive - so we left you. Our scientists seeded the primordial oceans of many worlds, where life was in its infancy. This body you see before you, which is of course shaped as yours is shaped, for you are the end result. The seed code also contains this message, which was scattered in fragments on many different worlds. It was our hope that you would have to come together in fellowship and companionship to hear this message, and if you can see and hear me, our hope has been fulfilled. You are a monument, not to our greatness, but to our existence. That was our wish - that you too would know life and would keep alive our memory. There is something of us in each of you, and so, something of you in each other. Remember us." Though Dr. Galen died before he could complete his work, the message was discovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise, along with representatives of the Klingon, Cardassian and Romulan races. (TNG: "The Chase") Episode writer Ronald D. Moore has stated that it is possible, though not explicit, that these ancient humanoids are the Preservers first mentioned in TOS: "The Paradise Syndrome". Many fan fiction authors have picked up on this speculation, as did professional Trek novelists Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens in their books Federation and Preserver. Star Trek Online' also established them as the same species.
