  • William Henry Egg was a Third Class steward of the Titanic. He died in the sinking. He was born in Bow, Middlesex, England in 1864, his birth being registered in Poplar in the June quarter of that year. His parents were William Henry Egg (1832 - 1902) and Agnes Matilda Evered (1827 - 1901), both Middlesex natives who had married in Poplar in 1852. Together they had six children: Matilda Ann (b. 1856), Agnes Ann (b. 1858), Emily (b. 1860), Louisa (b . 1868), Alice (b. 1870), and William. William first appears on the 1871 cenus living at 79 Thackerey (?) Road in St Leonard, Shoreditch, Middlesex and his father is described as working on the railway lines. Living at 38 Coburn Street by the time of the 1881 census his father is now described as a house decorator. William was married in mid-1885 in Middlesex to Selina Harriet Marcham, a London-native born in 1867. They appear as a married couple on the 1891 census living at Raverley (?) Street in Bromley, together with their children: William George (b. 1886), Ernest Henry (b. 1888) and Lena Marie (b. 1890). They have moved to 21 Castle Avenue in Walthamstow, Essex by the time of the 1901 census. By the time of the 1911 census William is absent and his wife and daughter are living at 58a London Road, West Croydon where his wife is described as a confectioner. Unfortunately the 1891 and 1901 census forms are illegible and don't reveal William's profession pre-Titanic, but it seems he was not at sea during this time. When William Egg signed-on to the Titanic, on April 4th, 1912 at Southampton, he gave his address as 1a Brixton Trent Road, Surrey. His last ship had been the Majestic. As a third class steward he received monthly wages of £3 15s. William Egg died in the sinking. His body, if recovered, was never identified. His widow Selina died in 1918 in London. Both his sons later married but what became of them isn't certain. His daughter Lena married Adrien Vaucher in 1917 and died in Berkshire in 1963.
