The torpedo boats of this class were the first attempt to create a torpedo craft capable for operations on the high seas, whereas older building patterns were primarily designed for coastal operations. Most of them still use conventional triple expansion engines, but some were already fitted with turbines. G132 is the only boat of its class on the North Sea station, most of the others serve as patrol or training vessels close to home or in the Baltic.
