Larry played 12 games with the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the early 1980s. It has been told he was a fine offensive producer in junior and the minors but, at 5'8", he was considered too small to be a factor in the NHL. Larry scored 190 points in three seasons with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OMJHL). In September, 1982 he was signed as a free agent by the New Jersey Devils as they prepared for their first season since relocating from Colorado. Larry scored a goal in five games for New Jersey in 1982-83 and was a 40-goal man for the Central Hockey League's Wichita Wind. Following the season he was presented the Ken MCkenzie trophy as the league's top rookie. The 1983-84 season Larry played 7 games and aquired 4 points with New Jersey. After his time with the Devils Larry played for the Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League, (AHL). He scored 86 points in 74 games then scored nine times in the playoffs while helping the team win the 1984 Calder Cup. Floyd never received another chance to prove himself in the NHL. He played another ten years of minor pro mostly with Maine and the IHL's San Diego Gulls. During that time Floyd scored nearly 250 goals but never overcame the fact that he was a skilled player who came along when the NHL clubs had a ready supply of big players. Larry was an player/assistant coach with the 1988-89 Cape-Breton Oilers (AHL)but later became the head coach for the 1994-95 Detroit Falcons Colonial Hockey League, (CoHL), 1995-96 Championship winning Huntsville Channel Cats of the Southern Hockey League (SHL), the Huntsville Channel Cats of the CHL from 1996-97 to the 1998-99 season and the 1998-99 Flint Generals of the United Hockey League.
