Pilot was laid down by the Pennsylvania Shipyards Inc., Beaumont, Texas, 27 October 1941; launched 5 July 1942; sponsored by Miss Jacqueline Perry; and commissioned 3 February 1943, Lt. Comdr. S. W. Wetmore, USNR, in command.
