- Pumice is an igneous rock. It is the only known rock that can float on water, due to large airpockets in its core. It is mainly used as a grinding stone, to polish jewelery or sharp objects such as knives. Pumice is also used in making cinder blocks.

Pumice has an average porosity of 90%, and initially floats on water.

Pumice is commonly pale in color, ranging from white, cream or gray, but can be green brown or black. Pumice is a common product of explosive eruptions (plinian and ignimbrite-forming) and commonly forms zones in upper parts of silicic lavas. Pumice has an average porosity of 90%, and initially floats on water. Much of the surface of the UEG colony world Tribute was blanketed in frost-covered pumice.
