The band was founded in 1922 by the Lombardo brothers and has been playing since the heyday of swing music. Under bandleaders Alberto Lombardo (1922-1931) and his younger brother Carmen Lombardo (1931-1935) the Noble City Blues Band were extremely popular, and a much asked swing music ensemble. Until 1944, the NCBB regularly played at official dinners, music events, etc. When bandleader Sylvester Heywood and with him five musicians left the band, the band lost much of its good name. With swing becoming less popular in the 1940s, the NCBB has moved on to a wider choice of music.

At present, the band consists of eighteen musicians and one leader. As jazz music was again catapulted into Lovian mainstream music in 2010, the band has announced "to perform more often at various occasions. We've been a Lovian tradition for almost 90 years now, and we're not thinking about quiting."
