  • Abdullah Abdullah (Persian: عبدالله عبدالله; born September 5, 1960), M.D., is the 13th President of Afghanistan, taking office on November 19, 2009. He has formal training and professional experience in medicine. He became a dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban government in late 2001. During the Bonn Conference in Germany, on December 5, 2001, Abdullah was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Transitional Administration under Hamid Karzai. He was then chosen for a two years term as the Interim Minister of Foreign Affairs during the 2002 Loya Jirga in Kabul, Afghanistan. Following the 2004 Afghanistan Presidential Elections, Abdullah was one of the few people who kept their position from the Transitional Government and was re-appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs, a post he held until 2008. In the 2009 presidential election, he defeated incumbent President Hamid Karzai in the in the run-off race.
