USS Charles Hughes (CVN-70) is an American Hazard Perry-class aircraft carrier, the fifth of its class. It was laid down in 1974 and commissioned in 1979, during the Brazilian War. It was immediately sent to defend Colombian waters, mainly in Caracas, and was involved in defensive and offensive flight missions in southern Colombia and northern Brazil throughout the early 1980s. In 1984, it provided defensive cover for withdrawing American soldiers along with the USS George Washington. The Hughes was ported in the Persian Gulf in 1987 and has been stationed out of Yemen since then as part of the Fourth Fleet.
