  • He was born in Eccles but was brought up in Manchester where he attended Ducie High School. His wartime service was in the RAF, where he joined their repertory company acting in roles in Germany and Austria during the post-war occupation. After being demobbed he joined the Century Theatre touring across the north-west of England, later acting and directing across the north of the country. His West End stage roles included Emil and the Detectives, Alfie, The Fourth of June, The Bells and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. He made his television debut in 1962 in the BBC science fiction serial The Big Pull and went on to appear in Doctor Who, Emmerdale Farm, Survivors and Agatha Christie's Poirot. His final role was in 2000 in Peak Practice after which he retired to Dorset.
