  • Haiti is a Caribbean nation located on the western third of the Greater Antillean island of Hispaniola, with its northern, western and southern borders against the Caribbean Sea and its eastern border with Dominica. Haiti's capital is Port-au-Prince, and has a population of roughly 10,670,880, making it the most populous independent Caribbean country. Originally a French colony, Haiti overthrew French control in the 1802 Haitian revolution and suffered through a volatile 19th century, including losing the Spanish-majority Dominican territory on its east. In the 20th century, Haiti emerged as a contested client state with pro-American and pro-French parties, whose importance as an American proxy state under General Paul Magloire was underscored in the black nationalist revolution of 1958 that put the Duvalier family in power, making Haiti a Cold War battleground. Haiti was the site of nuclear missiles until their strategic relevance was made moot by ballistic medium-range missiles in Canada in the 1970s, when they were removed. Jean-Claude Duvalier, the son of revolutionary Francois Duvalier, was overthrown in a 2012 popular uprising inspired by similar protest movements in Southeast Asia.
