abstract
  • The United States presidential election of 2004 was held on Tuesday, November 2, 2004, to elect the President of the United States. It was the 55th consecutive quadrennial election for President and Vice President. Independent candidate and incumbent President Charles Malcolm Edwards defeated Democratic Party candidate, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, and Republican Party Candidate former Vice President John McCain. While Foreign policy and the economy were important issues during the campaign, the main theme of the race was how government, and ultimately the country must change, particularly in response to NeoConGate. McCain attempted to draw attention away from his involvement in what led to the investigation, while Edwards championed for a more open and responsible government, focusing on how well he handled the investigation. Senator Kerry received very little attention, and was widely considered a throw away candidate, winning only his and Democratic Chairman Howard Dean's home states of Vermont and Massachusetts. The political map experienced a paradigm shift in allegiances, McCain narrowly won his home state of Arizona, but lost Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and even Texas to the Edwards campaign. In the Electoral College, Edwards received 437 votes, McCain 85, and Kerry 15.
