Folsom beat out the candidate of the ruling Independence Party, Newt Gingrich the party of Mike Huckabee and Robert J. Bentley. Folsom tried to end the adversarial relationship with the Soviet Union by receiving Premier Gennady Zyuganov in a state visit during the Confederate independence day celebrations in 2014.
