The United Kingdom maintained a policy of trade hostilities with Sweden for the first decades of the 19th century, due in large part to Swedish interference with the War of Independence for United New England. This was greatly helped by Sweden's strong stance against Napoleon Bonaparte with the Third Coalition, but just as quickly sundered with Sweden's help to the United New Englanders. At the Treaty of Paris, a side treaty was concluded that gave the United Kingdom almost exclusive shipping rights with the Far East. At this point Tranquebar was also ceded to the United Kingdom from Sweden.
